Less pain. Less drugs. A better quality of life with Cefaly!

Treatment and prevention of migraines and headaches

Cefaly pain-relieving treatment is a tried-and-tested technique. Extremely well-respected scientific reviews have confirmed the effectiveness of this method for several years.

Frequent headaches, anxiety and stress ? Cefaly can change your life.

With its pleasant stimulative effect, it inhibits pain, arrests headaches, calms anxiety and soothes stress.

A few sessions a week are all that’s needed to restore your wellbeing, clear your head and alleviate stress.

A proven technology in the treatment of headaches

Numerous tests and clinical studies bear witness to Cefaly’s impressive effectiveness, with 85% of users being extremely satisfied.

State-of-the-art technology

The Cefaly pain-relieving treatment is a tried-and-tested technique.

Extremely well-respected scientific reviews have confirmed the effectiveness of this method for several years, however, the equipment has to date been complex, heavy, cumbersome and expensive.

At last, sophisticated Cefaly technology now offers simple, lightweight and economical equipment.

Safe and effective

Cefaly uses TENS technology, which has been known about in medical circles for over 40 years and is used widely in pain treatment centres.

This technology is renowned for its safety and absence of side-effects. Its effectiveness has been scientifically proven in clinical studies and confirmed by statements from its users.

Statistics

  • 87% of users describe a definite improvement
  • 79% of users significantly reduce their consumption of drugs
  • 2 out of 3 tension headaches are halted by Cefaly’s programme 1
  • 65% reduction in head pain sensitivity after 20 minutes of treatment with Cefaly
  • 66% significant reduction in the pain of the attack after 20 to 40 minute of treatment with Cefaly’s programme 1
  • 59% significant reduction in the frequency and duration of painful episodes
  • 1 in 4 migraine attacks are controlled by Cefaly’s programme 1

Principles behind Cefaly

What does Cefaly work on?

Cefaly uses electric impulses to act on the nerve cells. From a physiological perspective, only two types of cell respond to electrical stimulus: muscle cells and nerve cells. Cefaly acts specifically on nerve cells – in other words on nerves themselves, and it is the nerves that are affected by pain.

What nerve does Cefaly work on?

The main nerve in the head that is involved in headaches is known as the trigeminal nerve. The main branch divides into two at the level of the orbit. The Cefaly electrode covers this bifurcation and therefore acts on this main part of the trigeminal nerve. Through this electrode, Cefaly transmits impulses that are extremely specific and perfectly adapted to the trigeminal nerve.

What actions does this have on the trigeminal nerve?

Cefaly acts on the trigeminal nerve and the nervous system via two principal mechanisms:

 Endorphin-producing mechanism

TENS mechanism or “gateway control”

A Cefaly programme stimulates the endorphin-producing nerve fibres (Aδ) of the trigeminal nerve, which increases their production and thus the number of endorphins. Endorphins are the neuro-hormones that give a feeling of wellbeing. With a higher level of endorphins, the trigger threshold for a headache or migraine is altered, and there are therefore fewer such attacks.

One of the Cefaly programmes stimulates the touch sensitivity fibres (Aβ) of the trigeminal nerve at high frequency, partially blocking the entry of pain into the nervous system. This mechanism is called the gateway control system, in other words the influxes of touch sensitivity are increased to the point that they do not leave any space for the influx of pain stimulus.

  • Usage protocols
    • Common migraine treatment
Cefaly should certainly be used for prevention. Perform a daily session of 20 minutes with programme 2 for 2-3 months, then reduce to 2-3 sessions a week.
    • Migraine with aura treatment
Cefaly should certainly be used for prevention. Perform a daily session of 20 minutes with programme 2 for 2-3 months, then reduce to 2-3 sessions a week.
    • Ophthalmic migraine treatment
Cefaly should certainly be used for prevention. Perform a daily session of 20 minutes with programme 2 for 2-3 months, then reduce to 2-3 sessions a week.
    • Transformed migraine treatment
The frequency and duration of attacks increase to the point that the pain can develop on a daily basis. Cefaly can in this case be used whenever it is required.
    • Menstrual or catamenial migraine treatment
Use programme 1 (attack treatment) on a daily basis 3 to 4 days before the start of a menstrual period.
    • Anterior tension headache treatment
More than half of patients who regularly suffer from tension headaches can gain relief by using only programme 1 when an attack strikes.
    • Post-trauma headache treatment
If you are still developing recurrent headaches some time after the initial trauma (more than 3 months), these are most commonly found to be anterior tension headaches.
    • Chronic headache treatment
When a headache is very frequent and caused mainly by the misuse of medications, this is known as a chronic headache. Cefaly is particularly useful in such cases, and can be used whenever it is required.
    • Morning-after headache treatment
Use Cefaly’s programme 1 twice in succession. At the end of the twenty-minute session, the intensity reduces gradually over the course of 30 seconds.
    • Vascular or cluster headache treatment
The duration of an attack varies from one individual to another, and can last anything from 20 minutes to 2 hours. Use programme 1 during a painful attack for as long as is required.
    • Frontal sinusitis treatment
Cefaly can be used to treat the symptoms of pain, but local ENT treatments remain essential.
Use programme 1 as required: generally once to twice a day whenever the need arises.
    • Trigeminal neuralgia treatment
Cefaly can be used to treat the essential and symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia.
    • Ophthalmic shingles treatment
Use programme 1 as required. At the end of the twenty-minute session, the intensity reduces gradually over the course of 30 seconds. During this stage, a simple press on the button will immediately start a new twenty-minute session.
    • Anxiety and stress treatment
Use programme 3 on the spot or on a regular basis. On-the-spot use involves carrying out one or two sessions in succession, whenever you feel the need to relax or to treat a bout of stress.

  • CE & ISO Medical

    CE Medical mark

Cefaly bears the CE Medical mark. Independent official bodies have checked that it complies strictly with the European directive applicable to medical devices, namely 93/42 EEC.

As part of its ISO Medical certification process, STX-Med has implemented a monitoring system. This system reports that tens of millions of Cefaly devices have been in regular use for several years and not a single incident has been reported.
